This square style basin has Buddhist effigies carved on all four sides and is a part of a tsukubai, or an arrangement
which includes the basin
and the surrounding stones. One (teshoku-ishi) to hold a lantern or candle
for evening ceremonies, another (yuoke-ishi)
on which to set a bowl of warm water during the cold season, and
the front stone (mae-ishi) on which to stand to use the basin.
